THTC treatment option: Neurosurgery

Turkish neurosurgeons successfully treat degenerative spinal disorders, vascular diseases of the brain and the spinal cord, hydrocephalus, and neuro-oncology cases.

A multi-disciplinary team approach is used for all neuroendoscopy, functional neurosurgery and peripheral nerve surgery procedures.

All three kinds of epileptic surgery (resective surgery, disconnection surgery and vagal nerve stimulation) are performed successfully in Turkey.

Since 1997, Turkish neurosurgeons have successfully used gamma knife technology . They are amongst the top five teams in the world in terms of the number of patients treated using using gamma knife radiosurgery.

This painless computer-guided treatment delivers highly focused radiation to tumours and lesions in the brain. This significantly reduces the rehabilitation period and eliminates the complications inherent in traditional surgery.

Today, neurosurgeons at the leading Turkish clinics and hospitals use the 5th generation Gamma Knife, which directs the necessary radiation doses precisely into the tumour, without affecting neighboring organs and tissues.

Another important achievement in Turkish neurosurgery is the possibility of intra-operative MRI scans . During the operation, the patient is placed in an MRI box that is compatible with the operating table. This enables the surgeons to monitor the quality of tumour removal. The operation continues according to the data received from the MRI scan. Today, only 22 clinics in Europe have this technology.

In Turkey, we are also able to perform endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery . This is performed through the nose, without opening the cranium, and is successfully used to remove pituitary tumours. This ensures fewer complications and much faster recovery compared to traditional open brain surgery.
